65 Years Since the Ethnic Cleansing of the Kalmyks

It has been 65 years since the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet ordered the deportation of the Kalmyks from their homeland to Siberia. I do not have time to write a new post this year, but here are some of my previous posts on the subject.

Otto, my aunt and her 8 children were resettled from the Zhitomir region to the Donetz area in Eastern Ukraine in 1935. In 1941 they were evacuated to Kazahkstan. Do you know what month it took place. I enjoy your blog. Keep it up.

It would have been between 25 September and 10 October 1941.

I did my Phd on the Crimean Tatars several years ago (on the then-contemporary movement) and am revisiting it now for a novel I'm working on. Sorry, couldn't find your email. Do you know if the NKVD camp commandants at the special settlements in Uzbekistan were local Uzbeks or Russians sent there from elsewhere?

The special settlement commandants of the NKVD in Uzbekistan would have been mostly Russian. Many of them, however, would have been Russians from Uzbekistan. But, some of the commandants would have been Uzbeks as well.
